PRAY AS A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS FOR THE NATIONS (v1-2)

1 Timothy 2:1–2

1 I exhort therefore [building on chapter 1], that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings [plural], and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness [piety] and honesty [dignity/respectfulness].

Pray for people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (2:4).

•those needing mercy like Saul/Paul (1:12-16)

•those removed from membership as false teachers (1:20)

•all men (2:1)

•kings and those in authority in all nations (2:2)

•Jews and Gentiles (v7)

•people in every place (v8)

Q: How does it help you to view prayer as part of our ministry to all people in all nations? How might it shape the way you devote yourself to pray privately and corporately?

IN WORSHIP OF GOD OUR SAVIOR (v3-4)

1 Timothy 2:3–4

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

Q: Have you considered how much God is pleased by our prayers for the salvation of others?

FOR THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, MEDIATOR, AND RANSOM (v5-6)

1 Timothy 2:5–6

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all…

Q: How does this exclusive way to God influence how you concern yourself with praying for the salvation of others?

OF WHICH THE CHURCH GIVES WITNESS TO THE NATIONS (v6-7)

1 Timothy 2:6–7

6 … to be testified in due time[s]. 7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity [truth].

Q: How does it help you to see our ministry of prayer and proclamation as an extension of Christ’s ministry?

SERMON IN A SENTENCE: All the church is called to be priestly representatives of God to the nations for the salvation of men , peace on earth , and worship of God .
