A PICTURE OF LOVE

SERMON IN A SENTENCE: The church is called to love God and others through godly conduct in our worship gatherings.

The context is directly grounded in 1 Timothy 2:1-7 with echoes of Malachi 1:6, 10-12 and Psalm 24.

1 Timothy 2:1–7

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty [respectfulness].

Malachi 1:10–12

11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same My name shall be great among the Gentiles [the nations]; And in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: For my name shall be great among the heathen [the nations], saith the Lord of hosts. 12 But ye have profaned it…

Psalm 24

3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; Who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, Nor sworn deceitfully.

1 Timothy 2:8–10

8 I will therefore [concerning the church’s universal call to gospel-centered prayer]

   that men [males/husbands] pray every where [gathered in places all over the earth],

     lifting up holy hands [in holiness/purity],

        without wrath [anger] and doubting [disputing/quarreling].

9 In like manner [participating in gathered church prayer] also,

   that women [females/wives] adorn [beautify/order/decorate] themselves

     in modest [fitting/proper/respectable] apparel [clothing],

        with shamefacedness [restraint/decency/propriety]

        and sobriety [self-control/discretion/not sensually];

        not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array [culturally-shaped forms of impropriety];

         10 But with good works.

          (which becometh [is proper/fitting for] women professing godliness [outward working of faith in God])

HOLY MEN AND MODEST WOMEN

A confused world has been deceived by Satan’s lies to strangely deny this Creator-designed truth: men and women are different.

HOLY MEN

In every place in which churches gather for prayer, men should be free from impurity, anger, and quarreling.

We have such a bent toward making the purest things largely about ourselves.

Matthew 11:28–30

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

MODEST WOMEN

Scripture lifts the burden of worldly vanity and replaces it with gospel beauty.

Dress well, but dress to love God and others—not yourself.

How can immodestly revealing our bodies hinder unity, witness, and worship?

GOD’S NAME IS GREAT
